A Letter of Guidance to Haitian Biden Newcomers
(Version Française disponible)
Remember, this is a capitalist society. Your top priority should be figuring out how to integrate into the workforce machinery as quickly as possible in order to start generating or contributing to the generation of capital. Align yourself with the goals of the machine to be able to escape from it more easily. However, be strategic in your approach.
Finally, be prepared for the mental challenges that may arise on this journey. Seek support from your community and individuals who can provide answers to your questions. Additionally, strategize for your financial independence to eventually break free from the machinery or, at the very least, evolve beyond its slavery-like constraints. Here are some practical approaches to kickstart this journey:

1. Join a collective group or association, such as a Haitian association or church, for support and networking.
2. Find a mentor experienced in your new environment (Pastor, friend, family member). Avoid overwhelming them with daily questions and refrain from asking for money or favors.
3. Minimize or turn off social media usage to focus on your immediate tasks, information, and opportunities.
4. Avoid excessive TV, news, or distractions update related to Haiti. Stay focused.
5. Create a list of tasks with deadlines, starting with simpler ones like resume writing, credential translation, online courses, immigration compliance, and job searches.
6. Consider opening a Fiverr account to find affordable assistance for technical needs.
7. Learn how to set up a website using a template.
8. Set up ChatGPT and Bard accounts to help with problem-solving and answers to various questions.
9. Once you receive your work permit, open a bank account, preferably with a community bank.
10. Get a cellphone with a prepaid plan.
11. Establish a professional Gmail email address.
12. Beware of quick money schemes and email scams. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be patient with yourself.
13. Assess your prior skills and experiences thoroughly. Explore how to establish an LLC in your name, whether it’s for a barbershop, mechanics, Cooking/ Private chef, Security agency for parties or mini-store, Massage therapy, babysitting, makeup artist, gardening, kids sports or fitness coaching, Kids School transportation services or any venture related to any previous skills or background that can help you integrate the machinery as quickly as possible.
Once you have a job, avoid accumulating debt. Don’t splurge on expensive items to impress, unnecessary monthly bills, or car loans immediately after receiving your first paychecks.
Anyway, as a Haitian, you’re known for your hard work, determination, and survival instincts. I have complete confidence that you’ll thrive in this new chapter. Stay focused and rediscover your strengths; few can endure what you’re capable of. Always remember why you made this significant sacrifice.
America’s expectations of you are straightforward: work hard, make money, pay your taxes, and spend your earnings then work hard again. However, my friend, don’t just follow these expectations; write your own goals on your path: work hard, pay taxes, save, invest, and strive to be free. — I wish you the very best on this new journey.
